Water Rates Expected to Rise
________ (town or community) _________ water rates may rise in
the near future. According to ______ (name) ________, ________ (utility)
_______ system manager, additional regulatory requirements are placing a heavy
burden on the system. Each year, the federal government requires testing
and monitoring for a growing number of ingredients that may possibly be in the
water supply, driving up the cost of operations.
"Our system has always provided a safe quality water supply
and met all federal and state regulatory requirements," ______ (manager)
_______ said. "In reality, the quality control standards we have to
meet are equivalent to smoking two cigarettes in a lifetime. The
concentrations we have to test for and remove if present are miniscule.
There is much more required than just pumping water and it simply costs
money. We have no choice but to comply, unless Congress does something to
lessen the burden on the consumer." The _______ utility ________
recently conducted a self-assessment of its managerial, financial and technical
capability to meet further needs and identified areas that might need more
scrutiny in the future. "Overall, the system is in good shape right
now," ________ (system manager) ________ said.
